At Maihaugen you will find the good, old Christmas feeling. We offer a program both before and during Christmas.
Maihaugen's Christmas Market
At Maihaugen's Christmas Market you can experience the good, old Christmas feeling in beautiful historical surroundings. We recommend being here at dusk. The atmosphere when the lanterns are lit is very special.
At the Christmas Market you will find a wide selection of stalls with Norwegian craft and home craft products, local food and Christmas decorations.
There are many children's activities such as gingerbread baking, Christmas workshops and sleigh rides. Choirs, bands and other musicians contribute to the good Christmas atmosphere.
Christmas in historical homes
The special thing about Christmas at Maihaugen is that you can look into historic homes and see how Christmas was celebrated as in the old days.
Queen Sonja's childhood home is not open, but you may look in through the windows at the veranda and see the living room decorated for Christmas as around 1960.
In the Town of the open air-museum, Maihaugen's Christmas street is decorated with garlands made of spruce and yellow stars between the beautiful wooden houses. It is as if you are back in Lillehammer's streets in the early 20th century.
You can find your Christmas gifts at Maihaugen's Christmas market and in our museum shop which is full of Christmas decorations and quality products.
Maihaugen's Christmas tree
Maihaugen's Christmas tree in the visitor center is decorated by different artists or designers each year. The artist Sofia Vusir Jansson is decorating the Christmas tree this year!
Christmas programme 26-30 December
During Christmas, there are lights in the windows of the houses at Maihaugen. You may either join a guided tour or walk around the museum on your own and look into the open houses. Would you like to visit? Have a look at the programme at Maihaugen's website.
